Hello folks!
I played in the shop awhile ago (mostly Hordes/Warmachine), but am trying to get back into things with the GW games.
However, with AoS, while I love the model range in general, I am having a heck of a time picking a faction.
While my heart-of-hearts tells me I should just play Skaven, (mostly since that was my favorite army in the before times), I am currently leaning towards something like Kharadron Overlords for their aesthetics and maneuverability, but worry their playstyle is so different from many other factions that they would be un-fun to play against.
Not having any experience with the game system, wasn't sure whether there were some armies that were overly irritating for opponents (which I'd rather avoid, especially just starting out), or whether AoS was more of a "everything is broken in it's own way, don't worry about it" sort of thing.
Granted, the sky dwarves look like they have problems actually contesting objectives, and those big boats look intimidating as heck to paint, but bringing that many guns to a knife fight just seems unsporting.

My suggestion is for you to play the faction that gets you the most excited. You are the one that is going to build, paint, and play them, so you should pick the thing that you will like the most.
In my own experience playing AoS since first edition, the game is a lot of fun but there are definitely times where GW gets things wrong and releases a new faction or model that is above the power curve. But I've never seen something that made me personally think, I don't want to play against that. Also, GW has been pretty good with correcting issues later via FAQs\errata and yearly point updates.
With any faction I think you can build a list that is fun for you and not overly oppressive for your opponent and it sounds like that is the spirit in which you want to play. So my two cents is don't sweat it, start slowly (lots of us are open to 1000 point games), play what interests you the most, and jump on in.
